Cambi wins thermal hydrolysis contract in Warsaw

Cambi has signed a contract to supply a thermal hydrolysis process (THP) plant for the Municipal Water and Sewerage Company of Warsaw, Poland, at the South (Południe) wastewater treatment plant.

Thermal hydrolysis will significantly increase biogas production and improve biosolids dewatering, reducing energy, transportation, and incineration costs. Cambi’s contractual counterpart is the Polish construction company Inżynieria Rzeszów, the winner of the tender for the modernisation of the Południe plant.

“This is Cambi’s third project in Poland and the first B2 plant in this important market. The THP plant will receive the biosolids from the first digester, then send the hydrolysed product to the second digester before final dewatering, in a process configuration that maximises the advantages of Cambi’s technology.

Located on the Vistula river’s left bank in southern Warsaw, the Południe works have been in operation since 2006, treating the wastewater from a quarter of the city’s residents. The modernisation project underscores the municipality’s commitment to improving resource recovery and includes, in addition to thermal hydrolysis, solutions for ammonia treatment and phosphorus recovery.

Designed and manufactured for quick installation, the B2 plant is a compact unit that fits within a shipping container’s footprint. It is scheduled for commissioning before the end of 2022.
