Basingstoke awarded wastewater project of the year at WEX Global 2020

Basingstoke Sewage Treatment Works has been awarded Wastewater project of the year at WEX Global 2020, Valencia, Spain. This award recognises Basingstoke’s outstanding efforts in reducing its environmental footprint. The nominations were evaluated by a panel of eight independent judges, experts in the water and energy sectors.

Thames Water owns and operates Basingstoke Sewage Treatment Works, one of the most innovative and sustainable works in the UK. Basingstoke’s previous conventional digestion treatment process was upgraded in 2017/18 with a new purpose built brown-field sludge stream, built around thermal hydrolysis (CambiTHP®) followed by mesophilic anaerobic digestion and dewatering. Pre-treatment of sludge produces higher biogas yield, allows increased loading into the digesters and produces a high quality and highly sought after biosolids after dewatering. Dewatering liquors go to a state-of-the-art Anammox process treating the high strength ammonia liquors using smarter process and lower energy before returning the treated liquors to the wastewater treatment plant.

Operational results show that up to 62 MWh of electricity is produced from the biogas every day, enough to power the entire site and export 50% of it to the community. Basingstoke has thus significantly reduced its carbon footprint and operating costs, making it an innovative and energy positive plant.

The award sets Basingstoke as an example of innovation and sustainable biosolids treatment for the industry.
