Hampton Roads Sanitation District Authority Approves Contract for Cambi Thermal Hydrolysis Procurement
8th June 2015
At the May 2015 Commission Meeting, the Hampton Roads Sanitation District (HRSD) Commission approved a contract for the supply of a Cambi Thermal Hydrolysis Process (CambiTHP™) to be installed at the Atlantic Treatment Plant as part of a project to upgrade solids handling processes at the facility.
Dr. Charles Bott, Director of Water Technology and Research for HRSD states: "The thermal hydrolysis upgrade at our Atlantic Treatment Plant using the CAMBI technology was determined to be the most reliable and effective alternative for the production of high-quality Class A biosolids, while at the same time significantly intensifying the anaerobic digestion process so as to allow future consideration of regional management of solids from our other facilities."
The Atlantic Treatment Plant will be the third facility in the US to adopt the Cambi Thermal Hydrolysis Process for enhancing the anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. The Cambi process reduces the size and cost for anaerobic digestion, while allowing communities to convert the solids produced to create green renewable electricity and a Class A pathogen free biosolids.
Atila Mellilo, CEO of Cambi, commented: "It’s great to see the North America Market adopting CambiTHP™. We have worked long and hard to convey to communities the benefits of the Cambi process combined with anaerobic digestion. This is a win for the residents of the Hampton Roads region, both in the quality of the biosolids that will be produced and the potential additional solids handling capacity gained as a result of this project."
HRSD operates nine major award-winning treatment plants in Hampton Roads and four smaller plants on the Middle Peninsula with a combined capacity of 249 million gallons per day (MGD). Wastewater flows from municipal piped systems to HRSD's interceptor system of pipes and pump stations to its treatment plants. A highly skilled and trained staff operates and maintains the processes and equipment in the treatment plants, meeting the technological and regulatory challenges of the wastewater industry. HRSD is recognized as a leader in the industry, with an impressive record of environmental permit compliance.
Cambi is the leading provider of technologies for conversion of biodegradable material to renewable energy, and valuable bio-fertilizer resources, and biofuel, this being based on Cambi’s patented thermal hydrolysis process (CambiTHP™).
