The Bakdal wastewater treatment plant, also known as the Saemul Park plant, is Korea's largest underground sewage treatment facility. Commissioned in 2016, the Cambi thermal hydrolysis process system at the facility pretreats sewage and septic sludge together with food waste before anaerobic co-digestion.
The plant is situated under a recreational space that features several green technologies. The final biosolids product is used as fuel at an incineration plant.
Electricity is generated from biogas produced from the waste and reused to operate the facility. Sewage sludge and manure are converted into energy through heat-storage facilities. Last year [in 2024], the electricity saved approximately 2.1 billion won in costs, and the remaining electricity was sold to external sources, generating over 200 million in profits.
