Our environmental commitment focuses on maximising the positive impact of our
technologies and solutions, enabling clients to transition to low-carbon operations, while minimising our operational footprint.

Graph-Stats-Descend--Streamline-Ultimate 1 Enabling carbon emission reductions

Cambi's greatest environmental impact comes from the emission reductions our technology enables in wastewater solids treatment.

  • Our thermal hydrolysis process (THP) enhances biogas production, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, it reduces the overall volume of sludge, which in turn minimises transport emissions and decreases the need for energy-intensive disposal methods such as drying or incineration. In some projects, THP also replaces new digester tanks, which typically have much higher embodied carbon.

  • By transforming wastewater solids, stone meal, and garden waste into peat-free soil products, Grønn Vekst provides an alternative to peat extraction, a significant source of carbon emissions. Shifting to sustainable soil products helps preserve natural carbon sinks, while also reducing the emissions associated with synthetic fertiliser production.
  • Cambi's carbon impact extends across the entire sludge management cycle – from treatment to energy recovery and final reuse. Hence, a detailed carbon accounting of this positive impact is complex due to varied operational conditions in numerous countries and many interdependent factors. Cambi is exploring ways of better quantifying this impact while improving its own sustainability performance.

Synchronize-Arrow-2--Streamline-Ultimate 1 Growing local circular economies

Cambi's solutions enable the recovery and reuse of valuable resources from wastewater, contributing to the circular economy.

  • Our thermal hydrolysis process (THP) transforms wastewater solids into safe, high-quality biosolids, which can, in some places, be reused in agriculture as organic fertilisers, reducing the need for synthetic alternatives while enhancing soil health.

  • Beyond wastewater treatment, Grønn Vekst transforms treated biosolids and garden waste into peat-free soil products, reducing landfill dependence and promoting sustainable land use.

Reward-Stars-3--Streamline-Ultimate 1 Innovation for sustainability

As global challenges around climate change, resource scarcity, and circular economy adoption grow, we seek innovative ways to enable wastewater utilities and industries reduce emissions, optimise energy use, and recover valuable resources.

  • We continuously enhance our modular THP systems to improve energy efficiency, operational resilience, and system adaptability.
  • By integrating digital monitoring, automation, and process optimisation, we help operators improve plant performance, reduce downtime, and lower operating costs.
  • Our subsidiary, Grønn Vekst is developing sustainable alternatives to peat-based soil products based on compost, stonemeal and other ingredients.
  • Cambi actively partners with research institutions, universities, technology providers, and industry leaders to develop next-generation solutions for wastewater and biosolids management.
  • Our participation in research programs, pilot projects, and industry initiatives enables us to test and scale new approaches for emissions reduction, energy efficiency, and nutrient recovery.

Reducing our environmental impact

Minimising our carbon and environmental footprint is an important aspect of our
sustainability efforts. We aim for the lowest possible impact in all our activities.

Environmental stewardship

Environmental responsibility is embedded in Cambi’s manufacturing, supply chain, product innovation, and resource recovery efforts. We ensure that our solutions meet the highest quality and regulatory standards through strict quality control processes, certifications, and compliance with environmental regulations.

Beyond reducing operational impacts, Cambi prioritises sustainability in product design for long asset life, minimal maintenance and maximum resource recovery.

Minimising our
carbon footprint

Most of Cambi's climate footprint stems from travel, sourcing, manufacturing, and logistics. Long-distance air travel, office operations, and raw material sourcing – particularly steel for thermal hydrolysis systems – represent our most significant greenhouse gas emissions sources.

Cambi’s manufacturing process involves the use of natural gas, electricity, and water, while finished products are transported globally using third-party logistics providers. Waste, including hazardous waste, is sorted for recycling, energy recovery, or safe disposal according to local regulations and best practices.

Grønn Vekst, Cambi’s subsidiary specialising in biosolids and garden waste recycling, has a carbon footprint mainly linked to transportation and soil production.

Planning to lower our climate impact

Cambi intends to measure, understand, and reduce its climate footprint in the future, in line with evolving sustainability regulations.

As part of our materiality assessment, we aim to develop a structured approach to quantifying emissions across our operations, supply chain, and product lifecycle. This will provide a clearer foundation for setting climate targets and identifying opportunities for improvement.
