Psyttalia

The Psyttalia wastewater treatment plant is the main treatment facility for Greater Athens, serving around 3.5 million people while helping protect the Saronic Gulf ecosystem.

When EYDAP sought to reduce the plant’s energy footprint by more than 20%, Cambi and Aktor applied thermal hydrolysis (THP) to part of the site’s waste activated sludge. The result: increased biogas production, improved biosolids dewaterability, lower sludge-dryer energy demand, and reduced greenhouse-gas emissions.

Following the success of the first installation, Psyttalia added a second THP line in 2023 to treat the remaining WAS load, further strengthening the plant’s energy balance.
