Xiaohongmen Water Reclamation Plant

One of Beijing’s largest advanced wastewater treatment facilities, the Xiaohongmen Water Reclamation Plant is home to Cambi’s first operational thermal hydrolysis process (THP) system in China, commissioned in 2016.

The site treats sludge from around two million residents and is operated by  Beijing Drainage Group (BDG).

Xiaohongmen was modernised with THP alongside the Gaobeidian and Gaoantun plants. Together with the newly built Huaifang and Qinghe II plants, they form BDG’s 1-5-1 sludge strategy: one treatment technology, five plants, and one biosolids outlet—land application.

The adoption of CambiTHP has delivered significant environmental and operational benefits across Beijing’s sludge-treatment network:

  • Nearly 70% less sludge volume and a halved infrastructure footprint
  • High-quality biosolids for landscaping and ecological restoration, exceeding national pathogen-reduction standards
  • 70 million m³ of biogas annually, generating over 70 million kWh of electricity and avoiding 76,000 tonnes of CO₂e emissions each year
