Raleigh - Neuse River

Raleigh launched the Bio-Energy Recovery Project in 2019, transforming the Neuse River Wastewater Treatment Plant into the Neuse River Resource Recovery Facility (NRRRF) through the implementation of advanced anaerobic digestion technology.

As the city’s largest and primary wastewater treatment facility, the NRRRF will benefit significantly from this shift to thermal hydrolysis (THP) technology. Biogas produced during the process will be converted into renewable natural gas (RNG) to power the city’s transportation system.

It’s estimated the biogas will help fuel up to 50 buses per day. Think of it as environmental innovation.

Meanwhile, biosolids production will be significantly reduced, resulting in a smaller environmental footprint while producing a high-quality end product.

We’re seeing solids reductions even greater than originally predicted.[...] It’s a huge savings. We were averaging about 15 truckloads out of here five days a week. Now, we’re not hauling at all; we’re stockpiling for land application.

Cambi’s THP system was successfully commissioned at the NRRRF in late 2024.
