Secunda - Sasol

Cambi entered into an agreement with global energy and chemicals company Sasol to integrate Cambi’s Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP) at Sasol’s Secunda Coal-to-Liquids (CTL) plant in Mpumalanga, South Africa.

After a successful 2021 commercial trial treating biological sludge from industrial and domestic wastewater streams, Sasol contracted Cambi to install two full-scale THP systems.

The project will reduce waste, improve air quality, and cut CO₂ emissions by enabling biosolids to be reused in the plant’s gasification process, marking the world’s first full-scale THP installation converting biosolids into hydrocarbon fuels and chemicals, and Cambi’s first system in South Africa. The full-scale units were commissioned in 2025.
