Abstract
This study compared incineration of raw dewatered cake (Case 1), of conventional digested dewatered cake (Case 2), and of advanced digested dewatered cake (Case 3) using Thermal Hydrolysis as anaerobic digestion pre-treatment. The results of the study showed that Case 3 produces 56% less cake to incinerate compared to Case 1 with a similar calorific value. Combining Thermal Hydrolysis, anaerobic digestion and incineration can lead to significant smaller incineration facility while keeping an autothermal operation. Such combination is in addition leading to green energy production (biogas) and carbon footprint reduction, a road toward carbon neutrality.
