Basingstoke
Thames Water owns and operates Basingstoke Sewage Treatment Works, one of the most innovative and sustainable plants in the UK. As a regional sludge treatment centre, the sludge stream and digestion plant is sized for about 760,000 p.e., treating sludge from different locations imported either as liquid or cake.
Basingstoke’s previous conventional digestion treatment process was upgraded in 2017/18 with a new purpose built brownfield sludge stream, built around Cambi's thermal hydrolysis process followed by mesophilic anaerobic digestion and dewatering. Pre-treatment of sludge produces higher biogas yield, allows increased loading into the digesters, and produces high-quality and highly sought after biosolids after dewatering.
Dewatering liquors go to a state-of-the-art Anammox process, commissioned in 2018, treating the high strength ammonia liquors using smarter process and lower energy before returning the treated liquors to the wastewater treatment plant.
