Beckton Sewage Treatment Works in east London is the largest in the UK and now serves as the receiving facility for the Thames Tideway Tunnel, a 25-kilometre “super sewer” designed to protect the River Thames.
As part of Thames Water’s London Tideway Improvements, Beckton was upgraded to handle higher volumes and meet stricter treatment standards.
A key upgrade was the addition of Cambi’s Thermal Hydrolysis Process (THP), which improved sludge digestion, reduced the need for supplementary fuel, and produced a high-dry-solids biosolids cake for land use or incineration.
Together with an on-site wind turbine, the system now generates enough renewable energy to cover about half of Beckton’s electricity demand, supporting Thames Water’s goal of energy self-sufficiency.
