Cambi will deliver its proven thermal hydrolysis process (THP) technology for the Malad wastewater treatment plant in Mumbai, India. The project is part of a major programme by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to modernise wastewater treatment and improve sanitation across the city.
NCC, a leading Indian construction and infrastructure company, will build the facility. Cambi will supply its THP systems to enhance sludge treatment performance at one of Mumbai’s largest wastewater plants.
The Malad plant is one of seven new facilities developed by BMC to serve the greater Mumbai area, particularly the western neighbourhoods. Designed to handle large volumes of wastewater—equivalent to an Olympic swimming pool every eight minutes—the plant will play a key role in improving the local environment and public health.
By integrating thermal hydrolysis, the plant will achieve more efficient, reliable, and sustainable sludge treatment.
Cambi’s THP technology breaks down the cellular structure of biological sludge, making it easier and faster to treat in the anaerobic digestion process.
This delivers several key benefits:
- Increased biogas production, generating renewable energy equivalent to the electricity demand of more than 5,100 Indian homes
- Reduced sludge volume and water content, lowering transport requirements by around 10 truckloads per day
- Low-odour, high-quality biosolids, suitable for beneficial use on land as a replacement for synthetic fertilisers
- Improved process performance, enabling the plant to exceed environmental standards while reducing lifecycle costs
Malad will be Cambi’s second thermal hydrolysis project in Mumbai and in India, reinforcing the company’s role in supporting sustainable wastewater infrastructure in the region.
Delivery of the THP systems is scheduled for 2027.
