The Riverside Sewage Treatment Works in Rainham, East London, treats domestic and trade wastewater, discharging to the Thames via Rainham Creek.
After on-site sludge digestion ceased in 1998 and sludge was sent to Beckton, capacity limits there led utility Thames Water to recommission Riverside’s digesters and install Cambi thermal hydrolysis, refurbishing four large digesters to handle up to 110 tDS/day.
This upgrade restored on-site treatment within the existing footprint, easing pressure on Beckton and improving efficiency and sustainability.
Riverside now produces about 4 MW of renewable electricity from biogas, exports surplus energy and recycles treated biosolids to agriculture.
