Cambi and Norfund sign MoU for cooperation in emerging markets

Asker, 8 January 2021

Cambi and Norfund have signed an agreement to cooperate in the development, execution, and operations of wastewater projects in emerging economies through public-private partnerships (PPP) or similar long-term contractual models with municipal and private customers.

These projects will include Cambi’s proven thermal hydrolysis process. In parallel to taking an ownership stake, Cambi will contribute engineering know-how and support plant operations. Norfund will be an active equity investor, where in addition to capital, it will provide extensive experience as a trusted investor in sustainable infrastructure in emerging markets.

“This agreement underscores Cambi’s strategic objective to own and operate projects that implement our proprietary THP technology. In Norfund, we have found a well-respected partner with extensive experience in developing countries. By combining forces, we aim to bring state-of-the-art wastewater and biosolids treatment and services to more people and new countries”, said Maarten Kanters, Managing Director of Cambi Invest.

The memorandum of understanding marks the first step of what is envisaged to become a broader cooperation in systematic project development in this sector. The initial focus will be on South Africa, where several projects are already under development. Both Norfund and Cambi have expressed interest to, with time, expand the scope of collaboration to other African countries, as well as in Latin America and Asia.
