Cambi to supply an advanced sludge processing facility in Belgium

Asker, 5 November 2021, 17:15 CET

Cambi has signed a contract with Aquafin to supply a complete sludge processing facility built around the thermal hydrolysis process (THP), for the Deurne-Schijnpoort sludge treatment plant in Antwerp, Belgium.

The project entails the delivery of a THP plant installed after anaerobic digestion, a relatively recent design. The configuration maximises sludge dewaterability and reduces the need for downstream drying and incineration. The process also substantially increases biogas production by recycling the final dewatering liquid, also known as centrate, to the digesters.

“Schijnpoort is an interesting project for Cambi, demonstrating the value of thermal hydrolysis at sites with sufficient digestion capacity. The new sludge processing facility will significantly reduce operational costs. We look forward to working together with Aquafin to bring the new system into operation”, said Eirik Fadnes, CEO Cambi Group.

In addition to the thermal hydrolysis system, Cambi will supply a steam boiler, boiler water production, final dewatering and process air treatment. The contract includes operations support and other services.

The construction contract follows basic and detailed engineering studies carried out by Cambi for Aquafin. The thermal hydrolysis plant is scheduled for completion before the end of 2023.
