Cambi wins a large turnkey contract in Fredrikstad, Norway

Cambi has been designated the winner of the public tender for a turnkey sludge treatment plant, including the thermal hydrolysis process (THP), at FREVAR KF’s Øra wastewater treatment plant in Fredrikstad.

The compact Cambi THP system will be installed in front of two new anaerobic digesters to break down the plant’s sewage sludge and imported septic sludge fractions. The solution will eliminate harmful pathogens, remove foul odour from the biosolids, increase biogas production, and significantly lower the final digestate volume, reducing operational costs and enhancing biosolids handling. The site’s improved energy balance will also reduce carbon emissions considerably.

Cambi’s project is delivered in two phases. The cooperation phase will take place this year and define the preliminary design to optimise integration for cost and energy efficiency. The second phase entails building a new sludge digestion plant with thermal hydrolysis pre-treatment. Cambi’s scope comprises the entire sludge digestion plant with thermal hydrolysis equipment, except for the digester and sludge storage tanks.

FREVAR KF is the municipal company for water, waste, wastewater, and energy recovery in Fredrikstad. The company is building a new wastewater treatment plant at Øra, including pre-treatment, secondary treatment and a sludge treatment plant to meet stricter discharge regulations at the mouths of the Glomma river. The total project is made of six different procurement packages. Cambi’s award corresponds to one of these packages – the sludge treatment process.

The thermal hydrolysis system in Fredrikstad will be Cambi’s 10th in Norway. Following standard public procurement procedures, the contract is expected to be signed after a notice period expiring on 31 July 2022 (Norwegian ‘karenstid’).

The biogas plant construction will start in 2023, with the handover scheduled for 2027.
