Advanced digestion of sludge enhances shift of biosolids management strategy in Beijing

Abstract

This paper provides an overview of sludge treatment in Beijing, which selected thermal hydrolysis to achieve advanced digestion of sewage sludge at five big treatment centres completed in 2017. It analyses early performance data from the Gaobeidian plant.

Advanced digestion of sewage sludge has gained support in central government departments in China. In the coming years, the trend is to integrate co-digestion of sludge and biowaste.
